It’s always good to do a little something now and then that stretches your creative muscles! For me, that’s mixed media. I am not much of a mixed media artist, I generally stick to clean and simple cards. I love the look, love the challenge of it, but never feel like I can totally pull it off.
Technically, mixed media is just what it sounds like- mixing several mediums on a project. In the craft world, however, it has become an art form that makes us think of gorgeous embellishments, texture pastes, sprays, inks, photos, and so many other techniques that come together to create stunning pieces of art and decor.
While my piece today isn’t complicated and overly stunning, it is a special piece because of the photos of my baby girl.
I began by taking a LARGE MEDIA TAG from Brutus Monroe and spreading some gesso on it. Now, you dont really need gesso, these tags are very thick and sturdy and hold up to a variety of mediums on their own, but I wanted to add some over a stencil to create the circle background you see here.
I grabbed by POLKA stencil and added gesso over the top with my BRUTUS MONROE PALETTE KNIVES. Then, as the gesso was still wet, I sprinkled a little bit of GILDED EMBOSSING POWDER over it, and melted it with my heat tool. I love that shine from the powder!
I then took some IRIDESCENT GOLD GLIMMER MIST and sprayed some onto the tag. This mist is a clear color with a bit of gold shimmer. I just wanted to wet the surface of the tag so that I could then add some OZ SURFACE SPRAY with a paintbrush and let it spread through the Glimmer Mist to get a softer application of the Surface Spray. Worked like a charm! I let the SURFACE SPRAY spread through the Glimmer Mist all the way to the bottom of the tag, and then dried it with my heat tool.
After the spray was dry, I added my photos and then embellished around them. I have a video of HOW I SIZE MY PHOTOS if you are interested.
My embellishments consist of some flowers I had in my stash, a wax seal, some bits of lace, and a butterfly that is stamped and embossed on vellum. I used the BUTTERFLY SENTIMENTS STAMP SET along with EMBOSSING INK and some more GILDED POWDER.
I also added one of the PAPER BOWS from Brutus Monroe. These are amazing! They are totally flat but they look like they have dimension. Perfect for if you have a hard time tying the perfect bow!
I had fun on this piece and it has definitely inspired me to try to create more mixed media pieces.
