Farmhouse Autumn Mantle + Teal Pumpkins + CCB BLOG HOP!

Welcome, friends! We recently moved to a house that has a fireplace, so I am LOVING that I now have a mantel to decorate!

Growing up on a farm, it is no wonder that I love the Farmhouse style for decorating. I have rusty milk cans and metal tractor wheels decorating my front porch, and I absolutely love it. Who cares if we are in a quiet California neighborhood with no tractors anywhere in sight for miles?

I immediately wanted to go for a farmhouse autumn mantel, and with the help of a few CANVAS CORP items, I love how it turned out!

Like I already mentioned, we just moved this summer. Much of my decorations are still in storage, so I grabbed what I could from our boxes and kept it simple. The large white window was found in one of my parents’ farm sheds. I claimed it as my own, painted it with some TATTERED ANGELS CRYSTAL DIY AND DECOR PAINT, and then added the black handles. I also plan on printing some family photos to hang on the window for display.

My simple “Give Thanks” banner is one I made several seasons ago. I love the rustic simplicity of it, and it goes well with this farmhouse style. A little Canvas Corp BURLAP and CANVAS fabric cut into triangles and then hot glued onto some NATURAL JUTE. The letters are some black alphabet stickers that I adhered with some craft glue to be sure they stay in place.

I also wanted to include my Willow Tree figurines. Each one of these has a special meaning for our family. They show the different phases of parenthood that my husband and I have experienced. The little angel holding the child is in memory of our first son, Isaac, who passed away during delivery. Even though it has been five years since saying goodbye, the emotions and memories are still there. I wrote about ISAAC’S STORY shortly after his birth, so please feel free to read about it if you wish.

My repurposed shutters are repurposed again on my mantel this year. In our last house, my shutters were hanging on the wall with candle holders and battery candles displayed on them. I grabbed these shutters from my parents’ farmhouse (yes, most of my decor is stolen from my parents’ house!), and added the candle holders from the thrift shop for only $.50! This year, since I knew I wanted to add teal into my Autumn decor, I thought they would look perfect on my mantel. I embellished them a bit with a few burlap and canvas flowers. Of course the fabric is from CANVAS CORP BRANDS! I have a quick video on how I make my ruffled flowers.

In front of my shutters, I added a decorative milk can (NOT from my parents’ farm), which I filled with cotton branches. I opted for the farmhouse cotton look instead of the traditional fall leaves or mums. I wanted something a bit different this year, and I really love how it turned out. The cotton adds a little texture to the overall look!

Last, but not least, I have teal pumpkins on my mantel this year! I do plan on adding more real pumpkins once it gets closer to October, but I grabbed my fake orange pumpkins and painted them with some more TATTERED ANGELS DIY AND DECOR PAINT. I used the color MANKATO for the main color, and then dry brushed on just a bit of CRYSTAL to make it look somewhat distressed.

The teal pumpkins are inspired by the TEAL PUMPKIN PROJECT. My daughter is 15mo, and we found out this past year that she has egg and milk allergy. We have had to make some crazy changes in order to keep her safe, so our family is now more aware of how difficult allergies can be. The Teal Pumpkin Project is basically a way of “Raising awareness of food allergies and promoting inclusion of all trick-or-treaters throughout the Halloween season.” – foodallergy.org

Our family definitely plans on setting a teal pumpkin on our porch this year, and offering non-food treats to children who may live with allergies! Such a simple way to make the holiday special for those children who cannot enjoy certain treats.
