MONOCHROME Blog hop!

Welcome back to another Wednesday blog hop with the Brutus Monroe Inspiration Team! This week, the team was challenged with the theme, MONOCHROME! Such a fun challenge that really makes you think creatively! When limited to one color, how do you keep your project from looking a bit flat and dull?

I will start by saying that I firmly believe that using less products and having a smaller stash will stretch you creatively. I think that being forced to use less makes you find new uses for what you do have. How do I know? I spend the first several years of my cardmaking endeavors with only a few items. Needless to say, I found every use imaginable for those few, precious items!

So, for today’s card, I decided to stamp, emboss, and watercolor using only ONE color- BLACK. First, I started by stamping out my COMSERVATORY OF QUOTES stamp set in black DETAIL INK and then embossing over it with my ICICLE EMBOSSING POWDER. Then, I cut a piece of MASKING PAPER into a square and positioned it over the stamped image. I used a piece of AQUA PIGMENT PAPER so that I could add some watercolor to it.

I then added some of my BLACK AQUA PIGMENTS around the MASKING paper, creating a loose frame. The masking paper did peel up a bit on the edges as I added water, but it still helped me create the look I was going for, so it ended up not being a problem. After I added color all the way around my masked area, I dried it with my heat tool and then peeled the paper up to reveal my square frame.

I love the look of layers of watercolor, so after the initial layer was dry, I added on another layer, and also some color to the leaves and the flowers themselves. Once all the color was dried, I trimmed down the panel to fit on top of a RAVEN CARDSTOCK card base, and adhered it down with FOAM ADHESIVE. Then, to finish the card, I added some black and white sequins and a simple “thanks” that I die cut with my ALPHABET DIES.

I think the use of the masking paper to make a frame is a technique I’d like to revisit again, soon! Maybe next time with a few more colors?

I hope you enjoyed today’s card! Please follow the links below to visit each team member’s blogs. Don’t forget to comment and leave them some love on their monochrome creations!
